The Pentel GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencil is a superior drafting pencil for architects, draftsmen, artists and enthusiasts. The 4mm tip design makes it ideal for use with rulers and templates. A unique, dual-action retractor advances and retracts the pencil tip to protect lead from breaking. The built-in lead hardness indicator allows you to easily identify your lead type. It comes pre-loaded with Stein HB lead, which never needs sharpening and produces a clear dark line. The finely chiseled metallic grip inlaid with soft, rubber pads makes extended writing and drawing comfortable. .

This is the best mechanical pencil, with a very nice balanced and a weight that feels reassuring in the hand without being clunky. I got one from a friend and used it all through university, and haven't touched another mechanical pencil since. My old Graphgear 1000 has held up perfectly for about 7 years of constant use, I recently bought two more to keep in various places around my house.
The gift box is a fun bonus. Its design is not terribly exciting, but it is sleek and inoffensive. The sticker (on the gift box and pencil) peels off moderately easily, and does not leave any adhesive residue if you are careful.
My only gripe is that when I write with the new pencil Ijist bought, the end cap holding the eraser rattles which makes a quiet but annoying sound, and a distracting vibration in the hand. My old (purchased about 7 years ago) Graphgear 1000 does not rattle at all.
For the price, it is just below what I would expect, and I wish there was an easier way to get more out of the eraser once it gets used down since taking the eraser out shows that there is more eraser inside below the metal clip. Otherwise, it is indeed the best mechanical pencil I have ever used, and mechanical pencils > wooden pencils, and I would recommend this as a buy it for life item (although I've only had it for around a month so far).
Nice weight, comfortable grip, a dream to use.
